Our first television was a little black and white set with a single antenna extending from the top. We got it a few months before President John Kennedy was assassinated, about this time of year in 1963. Before that time, we read books—all the books we could get! It was our favorite pastime whenever we were not working in the fields or doing household chores. But now…
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2 NKJV).
Stay Focused
Daddy’s Vision— Daddy had a strange vision one day in the mid-1960s. He was still a young man then (Joel 2:28). In his vision, the large family Bible on the coffee table in our living room slowly began to open by itself with pages lifting quietly. Daddy was mesmerized and tried to get our attention so we could see the strange phenomenon. But now… we were all glued to the TV. He was shouting, “Look!” “Look!” but not one of us shifted our eyes away from the TV. We had been reeled in completely, hook, line, and sinker, by the TV—a weapon of mass distraction with the power to divert our attention and shift our focus from a divine phenomenon taking place right in our midst!
I am not condemning TV. Like AI, it also contains much that is good and useful, along with the harm. But as with much of our music, movies, social media, and other media, Satan uses it to trap vulnerable people onto his agenda. Too much of what too many do, say, or believe is engendered by what is filtered into their psyche through TV, social media, music, and movies. And a large percentage of it, perhaps most of it, is pseudo, false, unreal!
As noted, before we were distracted by the TV, we had spent most of our time reading. And now a book, not just any book, but the most significant book of all, our family Bible, was beckoning to us to shift our focus back to the only thing that is truly genuine and will last forever, the Word of God!
And now… this is a word from God to us in these chaotic and trouble-filled times, reminding us not to become distracted but look to Him through continual reading and studying of His word. In so doing, our minds will be focused on Him, and He will keep us in perfect peace as we stay focused throughout the holiday season!
