December 5, 2024, The Sunset Rule

Divisiveness, polarization, blanket blame, and distrust have beset us as a nation, largely due to political mayhem spawned through social media and other influential “news” outlets. Too many people are controlled by anger.

“Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry” (Ephesians 4:26b NLT).

The Sunset Rule

Anger is normal. It is not a sin to be angry. We get upset with our enemies and with our loved ones, our spouses, children, siblings, co-workers and colleagues. The sin is in letting anger control us. When that happens, we are no longer in control of our emotions and behavior. We have surrendered control to the forces of evil! “Anger gives a foothold to the devil” (Ephesians 4:27, NLT).

Some folks get mad and stay mad for days, weeks, months, even years. But that is unhealthy and, well, SINFUL. Paul admonishes, “Don’t sin by letting anger control you” (Ephesians 4:26a, NLT).

So how do you handle anger? Paul again offers a straightforward, surefire solution, the sunset rule: “Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry.” That’s it! Take a deep breath; calm down, and let it go! Apologize for your part in whatever/whoever made you so angry.

Apologize sincerely. No ifs, ands, or buts—apologize genuinely. And do it before the sun goes down! My prayer is for unity, love, peace, and understanding among us all.

Focus Quote: “Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace” (Ephesians 4:3, NLT).
