August 25, 2025, How Do We Walk In The Light?
“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7, NKJV).
How do We Walk in the Light?
I heard a preacher say recently, “Darkness is not a thing. It doesn’t exist. It is only the absence of light.” That’s arguable. Whether it is a thing or not may be debatable, but it certainly cannot exist in the presence of light. When we turn on a light in a dark room, the darkness eviscerates.
In the verse above John, the apostle, sets up a four-point sermon on the Light. First, he clarifies that God is the light. Second, he admonishes us to avoid the darkness by walking in the light. Third, he explains that we have fellowship with one another by walking in the light. When we have the light in us and walk in it, we can avoid much of the conflict, misunderstanding, and anger with one another. Fourth, although sin is all around us and we are tempted and may stumble, the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin when we walk in the light.
Now, it is not debatable that “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). But what about us? Is there any of the “nonexistent” darkness in us? John, further admonished, “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth” (1 John 1:6). Two questions: How can we walk in darkness if it is not a thing? And how can we be sure we are walking in the light?
Be intentional! I believe darkness is both real and the absence of light, so we must be intentional about walking in the light. We are constantly tempted by the enemy, the prince of darkness, to momentarily step out of the light. “Let me lay my religion down for a moment, so I can get you straight!” When we react unkindly to unfavorable incidents, we may be subconsciously venturing into darkness. When we are intentional about walking in the light darkness cannot abide in us. It is eviscerated by the Light! But we need not walk alone.
Fellowship with other believers! “Together we run, together we strive.” We cannot thrive alone. We need to be in fellowship with other believers, walking together, following Him who is the light of the world. Enough said! This is how we walk in the light! I hope this makes sense to somebody!
Focus Quote: “Then Jesus spoke to them again saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.”
