It is said that the divine admonition to “fear not” appears 365 times in the Bible. That covers every day of the year! This is going to be brief but, I believe, significant!
“And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. And He laid His right hand upon me, saying unto me, ‘Fear not; I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death” (Revelation 1:17, 18 KJV).
Fear Not!
John, in exile on the Isle of Patmos, was praying and in the Spirit on Sunday, the Lord’s Day, when he saw something that caused him to be so overcome with fear that he fainted and fell as though dead! But in his theophany, his visible encounter with the One who was, and is, and is to come, Jesus touched him! And the words John heard from the mouth of the One who lived, died, rose to life again, and is alive forevermore were familiar– “Fear not!”
John, who was now and old man, had heard those words before. Decades earlier, when he was a young disciple on a small boat during a raging storm in the middle of the sea deep in the night, he saw what he and his fellow disciples thought was a ghost walking on the water. He was gripped with fear then. But he heard a voice saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid” (Mt. 14:27). Now, terrified on Patmos, it was the same voice speaking comfort to him again!
Jesus, who commands the elements and has conquered death, admonishes us too, to dispel fear, “Do not be afraid!” Come what may! Whatever you are facing or whatever is confronting you, know that the One who conquered death, hell, and the grave is alive in you and saying to you now, “Fear not!
