Battle Ground

Battle Ground is the title of a 2020 novel by American novelist Jim Butcher. It is centered around a protagonist who fights against the efforts of an antagonist who is trying to annihilate the city of Chicago. Yeah, I know, it sounds like some Marvel or DC Comics stuff. But it was the title that caught my eye. Everybody must take a stand on one or more of life’s battle grounds at some point. Our Number One antagonist, Satan, has made our families one of his primary targets. It’s his way of trying to annihilate what God has instituted and called good. So the family is a major battle ground for us.

In bringing Adam and Eve together as husband and wife, God instituted the family as the first human institution. Satan attacked the family from the start, first by tempting Eve with the first lie ever told on earth, then by inciting Cain against his brother, Abel. He is still attacking and trying to destroy the family. He looks for every opportunity to sneak in and destroy our families, and our homes. He will try to come in through holes in the wall.

The reason we have such a difficult time moving our children, grandchildren, or even husbands and wives onto God’s agenda and away from the destructive plans of the enemy is that our antagonist has targeted families from the very beginning! But we can and will win!

In Nehemiah 4:14, Nehemiah said, “After I looked things over, I stood up…” To win our families, we cannot be passive. We must first, see what the enemy is doing. Don’t look away; find the holes in your wall; look that devil straight in the eye! Second, stand up—take a stand and “don’t be afraid” of the enemy! “Remember the LORD,” who is on your side “is great and awesome”! Third, fight! “Fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”

When Nehemiah’s antagonists, Sanballat, Tobiah, and others heard that the gaps were being closed in the wall, they were very angry (Neh. 4:11). They plotted and stirred up trouble, but Nehemiah and his people prayed and posted a guard day and night. Nehemiah was successful in his mission. We will be too because prayer still works! We close the holes in the wall through prayer. So, see what the enemy is doing; take a stand on the battle ground, and fight for your family!
